Health Insurance

Accidents and illnesses can strike at any time. Although no one plans to get sick or hurt, we all need medical care for optimal health and to improve our quality of life. You, therefore, need to protect yourself and your family from health and financial risks.

Health insurance helps cover the cost of essential health benefits, putting you in the best position to keep your health in peak condition. A private health insurance plan for individuals and families protects you from unexpected and high medical expenses. It allows you to save on healthcare costs and most plans provide free preventive medical care.

The Four Common Types of Health Insurance Plans

When searching for Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace health insurance plans at healthcare.gov, you will likely find the following types of coverage:

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)

Point of Service (POS)

The different plan options allow you to find insurance that meets your unique requirements. The primary difference between the individually purchased non-Medicare healthcare plans listed above is the associated costs and networks.

HMO

Health Maintenance Organization

HMO plans offer various healthcare services through a specified local network of participating healthcare facilities and providers. You must use or visit in-network primary care physicians for medical care under a health maintenance organization plan.

If you need specialized care, your primary care physician will refer you to an in-network specialist.

The primary features of HMO insurance plans include the following:

  • You will pay less for your out-of-pocket expenses like copays and coinsurance if all of your medical care is provided by in-network providers.
  • A dedicated primary care physician will coordinate healthcare services.
  • A well-defined network of healthcare providers, hospitals, and doctors.
  • You will need referrals to visit specialists.
  • With limited exceptions, non-emergency medical treatment received outside the network will not be covered.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization – PPO Plans

PPO, or preferred provider organization plans, give you more flexibility with healthcare providers, as more medical professionals and facilities are part of their networks.

Although PPO plans allow you to see non-network providers, you may incur higher out-of-pocket expenses if you do so. Furthermore, you don’t need a referral from your primary care physician to see a specialist under a PPO plan.

The primary features of PPO insurance plans are:

  • You will have a more extensive network of healthcare providers.
  • The use of in-network service providers results in reduced prices.
  • You can access out-of-network providers and hospitals for an additional cost.
  • Premiums and out-of-pocket expenses are more expensive than those of HMOs.
  • You can see a specialist without a referral from a primary care doctor.

EPO

Exclusive Provider Organization

EPO plans, like HMO plans, require members to see doctors only within their organization’s predetermined network, except for urgent care situations. Coverage for visits to non-participating doctors is usually unavailable except under extreme emergency situations.

Most EPO plans don’t mandate a primary care physician and don’t necessitate a referral to see a specialist.

Critical elements of EPO plans include:

  • Lower premiums than PPOs.
  • There is no coverage for non-emergency out-of-network care.
  • A well-defined network of healthcare providers.
  • Ability to see specialists within the insurance’s network without first seeing a primary care physician.

POS

Point of Service

POS plans are a hybrid of health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations. You might need to choose a primary care physician from the plan’s network, just like with an HMO. Although the primary physician can refer you to a specialist, you’ll have to pay more out-of-pocket costs.

The main features of a POS plan include the following:

  • Using in-network doctors and hospitals has lower costs.
  • Access to healthcare professionals and hospitals outside their network is an added fee.
  • A primary care physician is responsible for coordinating all of your medical care.
  • Specialist visits necessitate a referral.

What Are the Advantages of Acquiring Family Health Insurance?

A family health insurance plan protects you and your family from the high medical expenses associated with sudden healthcare or injury treatment. Families need regular checkups, preventive healthcare, and the treatment of occasional illnesses. They also require a healthy financial situation in case of medical emergencies.

Purchasing health insurance coverage for your family gives you peace of mind about their well-being and health.

Health insurance is the best cover for a family in case of illness or medical emergencies. Without a family plan, most people face challenges getting quality healthcare services. Here’s more on the cost of family insurance.
